Ensuring virtual participation in UN rights mechanisms

A joint civil society demand digital access and participation at the UN Human Rights Council, Treaty Bodies and related mechanisms.

The Norwegian Forum for Environment and Development (ForUM) and over 150 civil society organisations have signed a letter urging the UN Secretary-General and other UN officials to ensure digital access and participation to the at the UN Human Rights Council, Treaty Bodies and related mechanisms.

The letter raises concerns about civil societies limited digital access, and the negative impacts of such.

"It's crucial that civil society actors have access to UN fora, particularly where such access has been available before. Many individuals from civil society who wish to follow these meetings are unable to participate physically due to travel restrictions, political engagements, or security reasons. Hence, ForUM has signed this letter,” explains Ingrid Rostad, senior advisor and acting head of politics at ForUM.

The organisation urge the UN to make the necessary arrangements to allow digital participation for all meetings, both formal and informal, in all its sessions in 2024.
